Little Grayback and Squaw Peak
This is another seldom used trail that gets high marks. Tight, narrow singletrack, a quad trail, and lonely gravel roads to tie it together.
Driving directions:
Make your way to Applegate Res., drive across the dam and take the first left on French Gulch Rd. There are a few houses near the road here so try to keep the dust to a minimum. At the top of the hill and around the 2 mile mark spot the Little Grayback trailhead sign on your left and find some shade to park.
The ride:
The first 4 miles are narrow singletrack with a nearly constant grade that never makes you get off and push. Next follow the gravel road for about 2.5 miles passing a few spurs to a wide open intersection - this is a tricky one to spot, between the two roads, straight ahead through the trees is the start of a trail (see pic below). Appears to have been cleared recently by quad riders but is much better suited for mtn bikes! After about 2.4 miles you reach the bottom, cross a creek, hang a left and follow the creek for a mile before crossing it again and connecting to a doubletrack. Stay on the main road for 1.8 miles where you will take a sharp left at a sign pointing to Squaw Peak. Follow this smooth and lightly traveled road for 3.5 miles back to the top of the quad trail and then another 2.3 back to a four-way intersection. Instead of turning left and heading back down the Little Grayback why not check out the view from Squaw Peak? The road is smooth and fast, dropping 600ft in less than a mile with big water bars to launch. And then finally a high speed run down the narrow, gently pitched trail back to your automobile. The last mile is so fast and tight you get a little tunnel vision!
Brown dashes are gravel roads, blue dashes are singletrack
The start of the quad trail is straight ahead.
